An Introduction to the Mische Technique A 1-Day Workshop in the Alchemy of Painting With Linda Chido

An Introduction to the Mische Technique A 1-Day Workshop in the Alchemy of Painting With Linda Chido

Date: Saturday, October 11th

Time: 10:00am -6:00pm

Class Description: Step into the world of luminous, layered painting with this hands-on introduction to the Mische Technique. In this one-day intensive, artists will learn the foundational stages of the method: imprimatura, underpainting, glazing, and finishing. We'll work primarily with an acrylic paint adaptation designed for faster drying times, while also exploring two additional variations:

- Traditional egg tempera + oil paint

- Solvent-free adaptation with casein + water-soluble oil paint

This layered approach not only expands your technical range but also invites a deeper connection to the enduring craft of luminous painting. Whether you're seeking to enrich your studio practice, explore historical techniques, or dive into the slower art of layered creation, this workshop offers a transformative entry point.

Topics Covered: Join Linda Chido for the first opportunity in Austin to explore the foundations of the Mische Technique. The Mische Technique, rooted in the practices of the Northern Renaissance masters like Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch, is a form of indirect painting built through carefully layered stages. Revived and reinterpreted in the 1950s by Austrian artist Ernst Fuchs, founder of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, and carried forward through a living chain of artist-teachers across the decades.

Linda Chido first trained under Philip Rubinov Jacobson, a close student of Ernst Fuchs, in 2001, receiving direct knowledge of the Mische Technique that she has continued to deepen through her evolving studio practice. Now, she brings this rare and transformative method to Austin for the first time.

She is honored to continue this living tradition of passing knowledge from artist to artist, teacher to student—a tradition that began centuries ago and continues to today.

Materials Needed:

- One 8x10 or 9x12 hard gessoed panel

- High-flow Titanium White acrylic paint

- Transparent acrylic paints:

- Yellow Ochre or Indian Yellow

- Alizarin Crimson or an earth red of your choice

- Manganese Blue (Golden Fluid Acrylics recommended)

- Acrylic glazing medium (Golden Satin Glazing Liquid recommended)

- Variety of brushes:

- Soft brushes for glazing

- Small rounds for detail work

- Large soft round brush for pouncing (similar to a circular blush brush)

- Palette (Masterson Sta-Wet Palette recommended; paper plates also available)

- Rags, water container, gloves (optional)

Ages Welcome: Ages 18+ are welcome

Cost*: $181

Location:

ArtUs Co. 10000 Research Blvd. Suite 141, Austin, TX 78759

Park near Five Guys Burgers, follow stairs down past Amy’s Ice Cream and Hanara Sushi. ArtUs Co. is the last door on the left.

*Cancellations within 48 hours of the start of class time will be refunded in full, minus the cost of instructor provided materials.

Meet the Instructor:

Linda Chido is a professional representational painter based in Austin, TX, with extensive knowledge and experience in the Mische Technique. In the early 2000s, she studied in Florence, Italy, and Vienna, Austria, under renowned painters Philip Rubinov Jacobson and Michael Fuchs, and very briefly with Ernst Fuchs himself.

Originally trained as an architect and urban designer, Linda holds master’s degrees in both Architecture and Urban Planning. Her love of design, structure, and layered storytelling deeply informs her painting practice. Linda’s work has been exhibited in the U.S. and internationally, including as part of Brigid Marlin’s Art of Imagination collective.

In addition to her studio practice, Linda is a passionate educator and advocate for accessible art education. She teaches both privately and through community programs across Central Texas, working with students of all abilities. This workshop marks the first time Linda is formally teaching the Mische Technique. She is honored to carry this tradition forward through her own studio practice and through her teaching.
