Illuminating the Portrait with Kara Timmons

Class Description: Join us for a full-day acrylic painting class where you’ll create a self-portrait from life. We’ll explore a classical technique of monochromatic underpainting and glazing to help bring depth and subtlety to your work. Perfect for artists of any level looking to grow their practice. *Some drawing and painting experience recommended!
Topics Covered: Painting the portrait. 1) Creating a sketch from life. 2). Monochromatic underpainting from life. 3). Glazing and detailing.
Materials Provided:
Vine charcoal and kneaded erasers
Spray fixative Glazing medium and paints
Some communal brushes
Rags Mirrors
Materials Needed:
11 x 14 canvas or panel, pre-primed with Gesso.
Palette - plastic palette with wells, or a sta-wet palette (recommended)
Brushes - Recommend a variety of filberts, flats and rounds (medium to small)
Any personal acrylic paints or supplies you’d like!

Meet the Instructor:
Kara is an Austin-based visual artist specializing in oil and acrylic paintings. Her current work explores the human figure as a conduit for symbiosis with nature, often embodying natural elements, flora, or guardian-like forms. Inspired by the awe-inspiring essence of wild spaces, her art reflects on humanity’s interconnected role within the broader web of life.
