An Introduction to the Mische Technique A 1-Day Workshop in the Alchemy of Painting With Linda Chido

Date: Saturday, October 11th

Time: 10:00am -6:00pm

Class Description: Join Linda for an immersive introduction to the foundations of the Mische Technique. Rooted in the practices of Northern Renaissance masters like Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch, this luminous form of indirect painting is built through carefully layered stages. Revived and reimagined in the 1950s by Austrian artist Ernst Fuchs, founder of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, the technique has since been carried forward through a living chain of artist-teachers.

The Mische Technique is an indirect painting process where images are developed gradually through layered applications of color and value. Traditionally, the underpainting is rendered in white egg tempera over an imprimatura on a rigid panel. Once dry, it is glazed with transparent oil paint. This rhythm of tempera and oil continues until the image is brought to completion with final touches of local color and detail.

While the Mische Technique is grounded in shared historical tradition, there are as many ways to approach it as there are artists who practice it. Each painter brings their own perspective, shaped by experience, lineage, and personal insight. In this workshop, Linda will guide you through the foundational steps, anchored in the traditional sequence, as it was given to her.

This approach will not only expand your technical range, it will also invite a deeper connection to the enduring craft of painting itself. Whether you're seeking to enrich your studio practice, explore historical methods, or slow down and embrace the meditative nature of layered work, this workshop offers a transformative entry point.

Meet the Instructor:

Linda Chido first trained in 2001 under Philip Rubinov Jacobson, a close student of Ernst Fuchs, receiving direct knowledge of the Mische Technique that she has continued to deepen through her evolving studio practice. Now, she brings this rare and transformative method to Austin for the first time.

She is honored to continue this living tradition of passing knowledge from artist to artist, teacher to student—a tradition that began centuries ago and continues to today.
