Behind the Canvas

Originally from Korea, and in Austin for the past decade, EJ’s expressive paintings are a treat for the eyes.

How long have you been making art?

"More than 20 years already!"

How did you get your start?

“I’ve loved drawing ever since I was a child. It was both my hobby and my special talent, and I always dreamed of pursuing a career related to art. Because of this deep passion, I’ve never once considered a life disconnected from creativity or art-making.”

What's a fun fact about you as an artist?

“Although I studied 2D animation and illustration, I now work as a fine artist. Another unexpected fact is that I once had a deep interest in biology and even won awards in science competitions during my school years.”

EJ’s art practice:

"My work centers on translating bright, uplifting energy into visual form, with the intention of bringing joy and emotional comfort to the viewer. The themes are often rooted in the symbolic power of hope, prayer, and the placebo effect—highlighting the transformative potential of belief and positivity. I use non-toxic, child-safe materials and a restrained color palette, prioritizing not only the well-being of those who engage with the work but also environmental responsibility. Through this mindful practice, I aim to reduce the ecological footprint of art-making while fostering a sense of safety and serenity."

Any big projects coming up?

"I’m currently preparing for upcoming exhibitions at gallery and hotel in Florida!"

Where can we find your work? (at ArtUs Co/ other places)?

“My work can be found at ArtUs Co, Austin City hall, Art Ovation Hotel, Art-to-You, and Art Avenue.”
